Alice Matthews (@alicekmatthews) grew up in Canberra and graduated from the University of Wollongong in 2014 with degrees in Journalism and Spanish. Transitioning to the working world, she travelled to Paris for a stint at The World Association of Newspapers and News Publishers (WAN-IFRA). There, she was an embedded video journalist and blogger, but dedicated most of her time to working on the global UNESCO Internet Study: Privacy and Journalists’ Sources. Alice began as a researcher at ABC radio current affairs in 2015, following an internship during her studies. From this role, she soon began reporting for the flagship programs AM, The World Today and PM.
Judges’ comments:
“Alice’s stories help expose behaviour that seems unimaginably in Australia in 2015. Acting on instinct, and working within tight time constraints, Alice has detailed the sexual abuse suffered by women training to be surgeons and the steps educators have now been forced to implement to deal with the controversy. Gripping, revealing and a wonderful example of powerful current affairs.”
