When she entered this award, Siobhan Fogarty (@Siobhan_Fogarty) was a 21-year-old undergraduate majoring in broadcast journalism at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst. Whilst studying Siobhan was active in the media workforce, achieving a lot in a short period. She worked in regional television news part-time, gathering breaking news stories and learning the journalist’s trade on-the-road. Siobhan worked in live radio news at university and in Bathurst and also sought experience in metropolitan newsrooms where she has interned on several occasions. Despite a heavy workload at university and in the media, Siobhan finished her degree eight months early and graduated in December 2013. She now works for Network Ten.
Judges’ comments:
“Fogarty showed great initiative, grit and skill in documenting domestic violence in a regional Australian town. Tackling an issue so prevalent in society yet often put in the too hard basket by major media outlets, Fogarty achieved rare access to NSW police patrols and took the viewer into the houses, car parks, courts and hospitals of Bathurst.”
