The Walkley Foundation is proud to announce a new fellowship for mid-career Australian investigative journalists to develop their investigative skills.

The Masters & McKenzie Investigative Journalism Fellowship is named for multi-Walkley Award-winning investigative journalists Chris Masters and Nick McKenzie, who were recognised in 2023 with the Walkley Honour For Media Freedom for their ongoing investigative stories about Ben-Roberts Smith across more than six years. The Fellowship is established in their names to encourage more groundbreaking investigations, supported by Walkley Public Fund and proudly supported by the Dennoch Fund, a sub-fund of the Australian Communities Foundation.

Mid-career investigative journalists are invited to apply for the Fellowship by 12 May. Five applicants will be selected as fellows and attend a two-day workshop program in Sydney on the weekend of 5-6 July, 2025. The workshop will feature Walkley-winning investigative journalists sharing insights into how they broke major stories, including Adele Ferguson, Hedley Thomas, Kate McClymont, Michael Bachelard and legal experts and commissioning editors/producers as well as Chris Masters and Nick McKenzie.

Gold Walkley-winning journalist and Chair of the Walkley Public Fund, Pamela Williams, said it was the kind of opportunity the Fund was proud to develop to give back to the Australian media.

‘Imagine being one of five journalists, in a room with all these titans of Australian reporting. Not only will you get the chance to hear all the behind-the-scenes of how they got up some of our nation’s biggest investigations, but you can ask questions to develop your own investigative project, and meet a cohort of peers.

‘I’m very excited to be a fly on the wall as the chair for the weekend workshop.’

Walkley Foundation CEO Shona Martyn said this was an opportunity not to be missed.

‘If you’re an Australian investigative journalist with at least five years’ experience and a pitch for the area, beat or story you want to investigate, get started on your application now. We welcome applications from rural, regional and freelance journalists, and those from smaller media outlets.’
